What is Data Driven Leadership?

Data driven leadership is a holistic approach to leadership that makes data the basis of entrepreneurial action. Data driven services, digital business models and radical changes in corporate strategies are major challenges for traditional companies. Leaders today need a deep understanding of data and how to effectively incorporate it into data driven decision-making. They must become a Data Leader. However, this is not just about data, as the digital economy also demands new approaches to strategy, culture and people in order to use data effectively and for success.

The Data Driven Leadership Training

In an MIT Sloan study (2019), only 9% of respondents felt that their organization already had leaders with the skills. A further 12% of respondents stated that their managers have the necessary data-driven mindset for leadership.

These results show: Technology skills are not enough. Leaders must also learn to build digital communities of trust and diversity through new leadership principles in order to achieve their goals.

Our Data Driven Leadership workshop for executives is designed as a learning journey and combines these two core areas: by helping executives to apply data, analytics and algorithms in combination with people-oriented leadership principles in daily practice.

Data leaders learn how to create a data-driven culture in order to bring people and technology together with the help of objective facts, different perspectives and a digital mindset, thereby developing data-driven business.

Content of the Data Driven Leadership Training

Module 1: Kick-Off the Learning Journey

In this brief session, leaders are getting connected and familiar with the purpose, format, goals, logistics of the learning journey and collectively define the ground-rules for their collaboration.

Module 2: The strategic role of data

We start to focus on the global and digital developments of our time and how they affect you as a leader and your organization – today and in the future:

  • What is data leadership and why do we need it?
  • How well prepared are you as a company and as a manager for the changes and challenges of the digital age?
  • What are the most important digital topics and trends of our time, what strategies are the best technology companies using, and how can you use them too?
  • What other megatrends are impacting businesses in the 21st century – and what is their importance for your business?
  • How do you make effective decisions (data-based decisions) in a volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous economic environment?
  • How can you sharpen your data awareness to effectively incorporate data insight into your decision making?
  • What new skills do you need as an individual and as an organization to make the most of the potential of new technologies?

Module 3: Building data literacy

To work effectively with data analytics and insights, we need to develop a basic understanding (“how to”) of the function and value of data:

  • Why are data, data analytics and business intelligence of such great value to organizations – what is the “value of data driven”?
  • What is the ABC of data and how do (A) AI Artificial Intelligence, (B) Big Data, and (C) Cloud technologies work?
  • What are the characteristics of big data and how can information from it best be used to solve complex business problems?
  • What is the CRISP model and how can it guide you on the path to becoming a data-driven organization?
  • How do you develop business hypotheses that can be tested and solved through data analytics?
  • What are the characteristics of structured, semi-structured and unstructured data – and when should you use which system?
  • What methods of data analysis are there – and which is helpful when?
  • How can you test and validate data with the help of modeling?
  • What are the roles and responsibilities of managers and IT experts in AI-driven projects?
  • How do they communicate effectively with data scientists?
  • How do you properly evaluate and measure the results of a data analysis – and what steps are necessary to implement the new findings?
  • How can agile, design and lean thinking improve your work with data?
  • How do you translate data insights into a business context (business world) in order to derive concrete action steps for yourself and your teams?

Module 4: Data-driven business requires a new leadership mindset

In addition to building data knowledge, leaders must also learn new leadership principles, skills, practices and systems to help their teams understand and work with data and new technology:

  • How can Data Driven Leaders provide meaning and direction for employees during your digital business transformation?
  • How do you integrate established and new leadership approaches to create synergy between old and new ways of thinking and behaving?
  • What is a data-driven mindset – and how do you develop it (lead with data)?
  • What are the unique potentials of people and technology – and how can you combine the two profitably?
  • How can you arouse curiosity and motivation for data projects and create innovation?
  • How do you avoid cognitive bias and instead develop an objective and holistic view of your projects, your company and the business environment to make decisions with clarity and vision?
  • How do you think about data in general and how do you deal with your thoughts and emotions related to specific data projects or analyses – especially when the results do not match your original expectations or wishes?
  • How do you cultivate “Diversity of Thought” within yourself, as well as in your teams and the entire organization to foster (technological) innovation?
  • What is “systems thinking”, why is it an essential leadership skill in the digital age, and how can you harness its power?
  • How do you make adaptability one of your personal and organizational core competencies to change direction quickly, flexibly and almost effortlessly when needed?

Module 5: Expanding the data mindset

Having developed a theoretical understanding of data and its use in organizations, we will now explore how to harness its potential practically in day-to-day business:

  • What data assets already exist in your organization and how do you determine what information still needs to be acquired to reduce costs, increase sales, improve products/services or drive innovation?
  • What specific methods can you use to make money with data and when should you use which monetization strategy?
  • Which methods of data analysis does your company currently use the most, and are these methods suitable for overcoming the current challenges?
  • How can you use digital storytelling to communicate data projects and results to different stakeholders in a simpler and more engaging way?

Module 6: Deepen your digital knowledge and become a data leader

In this module, we will further deepen your understanding of data and broaden your perspective on the use of technology in general:

  • What are the 5 Principles of Digital Ethics, and why are they so important for future business success?
  • What moral obligations exist in the collection, protection and use of data, as well as in the application of artificial intelligence?
  • What is the difference between supervised, unsupervised, semi-supervised and reinforced learning in the context of machine learning (ML)? What are the characteristics of each of these types of learning and which one is best suited to improve the processes in your team/department/company?
  • How do you differentiate between correlation and causation – and why is this important for your decision making?
  • How do you evaluate the potential of exponential technologies? Which ones should you integrate, and which ones are better left out?
  • What are the unique capabilities of humans compared to machines? How can we integrate the multiple potentials of algorithms and so-called “androrithms” to create synergy?
  • What can you do to develop your human potential and use it as a unique selling point in a world dominated by machines?
  • In which areas will humanity be most relevant in the future?

Module 7: Strengthening a data-oriented corporate culture

Finally, we will develop actionable approaches on how to take your new data know-how further into your organisation:

  • What is the Dialogic Process and how can it help business leaders have deeper and more valuable conversations about data, technology and business decisions?
  • What do you think are the key skills that ‘data-driven leaders’ need to successfully lead themselves, others and your organization through the
  • digital age?
  • What are the 4 digital mindsets, how do you cultivate them on your own and in your teams, and why are they relevant to improving data-driven decision making?
  • What do you need to do differently, what should you refrain from doing, and what can be done better on a personal and organizational level to leverage data and new technologies? What actions can you take in the next 72 hours to kick-start your digital transformation?
  • How can you drive positive change in your organization and in society as a whole by using technology and data “for good”?

Frequently Asked Questions

Data Driven Leadership ensures that each individual manager becomes a driver of change through data and AI – and does not unwittingly prevent it. Changes very often also require new skills and abilities from the people affected. The training is provides these skills and abilities and will be tailored to your specific requirements. This ensures that your managers master exactly the principles, skills and tools that are important for your company.

The advantage of a data-driven approach is faster, better and more comprehensible decisions. Managers make many decisions quickly. Decisions are often based on experience, intuition or gut feeling – they can be influenced by unconscious bias. Data-based decision-making means that managers and teams use existing or new data sources to make decisions and thus arrive at better decisions. These are comprehensible and proven.

Core competencies for data-driven leadership are a basic understanding of data sources and structures, analytics methods and technological concepts (data literacy). Allowing new perspectives is also an important skill. Data-based decisions can turn out differently than usual, and new and more perspectives are integrated. Data-driven leadership is also a cultural change and influences collaboration, co-creation and decision-making.

Almost every leadership situation can be accompanied by data-driven strategies. Depending on the field of action, function, situation or problem, data can be used to improve the quality of decisions. Data-driven leadership is becoming a deeply rooted leadership competence.

This question is difficult to answer because there are thousands of trainers and even more offers.

In general, we stand for New Leadership, so we don’t rehash theories from the 80s/90s. We don’t just impart knowledge with PowerPoint – there is often no shortage of that – but concentrate on application, experience, reflection and shared learning. And we don’t deliver standard formats, but adapt each training course to your specific requirements and needs.

In principle, many of our management training courses support cultural change at their core, i.e. they go beyond the mere transfer of skills. This makes leadership training a foundation for your organizational development.

The Data Driven Leadership training is designed as a 4-day event or as a learning journey over several weeks. Depending on your requirements or those of the participants, we can run this as a complete event or in several sessions.

If we choose the Learning Journey format, participants deepen what they have learned by working independently (also in groups) and learning on the job.

At best, every employee in a leadership role. Data Driven Leadership is new to everyone, so we do not impose any restrictions on our part. The mix of first line managers, middle and senior executives in particular often creates an interesting dynamic and a fruitful exchange.

Each training or program is developed to meet the specific requirements of your company. This begins with a co-creation, concept phase, iterative improvements and a roll-out. We don’t do anything “off the shelf”, but immerse ourselves deeply in your culture and structure. In this way, our work becomes part of your organizational development.

Admittedly, this is a challenge. How do you combine universal New Leadership principles and new leadership skills with very specific, strategic topics such as digitalization, AI or sustainability?

And how do you adapt this to your company? We master this through our community of trainers from different disciplines, who are integrated into the development process from the outset and “speak the same language”. This means we cover a diverse range of topics, but work together with the same spirit.

All of the trainers in our community have their own leadership experience, have all completed in-depth external coaching and/or trainer education and have also taken part in our internal train-the-trainer programs.
