The digital transformation is changing how companies will and must operate in the future. One thing is clear: a pure understanding of technology and the necessary hard skills are not enough to take advantage of this movement. What is also needed is a digital mindset. We explain what this means – and how you can develop your digital mindset.
What is the digital mindset?
The digital mindset is probably best translated as a digital “mentality”. It is not about specific skills, but rather a certain basic attitude that is made up of various behavioral and personality traits.
It is precisely these skills, values and behaviors that should enable the individual and the company to adapt effectively to the requirements and opportunities of digital transformation. These characteristics are summarized in the so-called six dimensions.
However, it is important to note that these skills and mindsets already existed before digitalization, but are now becoming particularly relevant. They are also influenced by environmental conditions and in some cases consciously moderated, for example through learning experiences.
The digital mindset is therefore not only crucial for the digital transformation, but can also be changed in an agile way in the long term.
The 6 dimensions of the digital mindset
The respective mindset dimensions differ greatly depending on the industry. This means that there is not ONE universal digital mindset. Rather, the individual characteristics differ depending on the industry – which also has an impact on the development of the digital mindset from company to company.
Openness & agility
The willingness to accept and explore new ideas, technologies and methods – including openness to changes in the way you work and think. At the same time, you can react quickly to challenges and changes.
Proactivity & entrepreneurial action orientation
Acting with foresight and implementing measures before problems arise or opportunities are missed. You think and act entrepreneurially and are prepared to take risks and develop innovative solutions.
Creativity & design motivation
You come up with new ideas that help to solve problems or improve existing processes. At the same time, you have the desire and motivation to actively contribute to the design of products, services or processes and drive positive change.
Customer centricity
You have a deep understanding of customer needs and expectations. Products and services are developed to meet these needs in the best possible way. To this end, customer feedback is continuously collected in order to improve the offering.
Ability to take criticism
You can critically question your own behavior and decisions and learn from them. You can also give respectful and helpful feedback that helps the recipient to develop.
Dealing openly with failure
It is accepted that mistakes can and should happen – this is the only way you can learn and improve your skills. At the same time, mistakes and failures are analyzed in order to gain valuable insights and promote continuous learning.
Digital mindset: the opportunities
Innovation and competitive advantage
The digital mindset promotes creativity and innovation, enabling new and improved products, services and business models. This in turn gives companies a clear competitive advantage – and lays the foundation for corporate success.
Better customer orientation
The digital mindset helps companies to better understand and respond to the needs and wishes of their customers. Through data-driven feedback analyses, companies are constantly improving their offerings – the result: satisfied customers.
Agility and flexibility
Organizations with a digital mindset are better able to react quickly to changes in the market. This enables them to adapt flexibly to new conditions and to recognize and exploit opportunities at an early stage.
Strong corporate culture
The digital mindset promotes a culture of openness, transparency and continuous improvement. Employees have the feeling that they can actively contribute to the development and success of the company, which increases satisfaction and loyalty to the company – by as much as 20% (shown in a 2020 study by ONESTOPTRANSFORMATION).
Continuous learning and development
In the digital mindset, there is a strong focus on lifelong learning and continuous personal and professional development. This keeps individuals and organizations up to date with the latest (technological) developments and promotes a culture of innovation.
Leadership: avoiding the digital divide
A digital divide occurs when different departments, teams or employees have different access to digital resources, skills or information. Such inequalities quickly lead to frustration and differences – and should therefore be avoided at all costs.
Ensure access to technology
Managers should ensure that all employees have access to the necessary digital tools and technologies. This can mean
Investing in technology: providing modern hardware and software that is accessible to all employees.
Equal access: Ensuring that no department or employee group is favored.
Digital training programs
Regular training and upskilling programs are crucial to keep all employees up to date with the latest digital developments.
Needs-based training: Training that is tailored to the specific needs and skill levels of employees.
Ongoing training: Continuous learning opportunities to keep pace with technological changes.
Promoting a digital culture
A corporate culture that recognizes and promotes the importance of digitalization is essential today.
Act as a role model: Managers should use digital tools and methods themselves and set a good example.
Open communication: Promote an open dialog on digital topics and encourage employees to participate in digital initiatives.
Interdisciplinary collaboration
Encourage collaboration between different departments and teams to facilitate the exchange of knowledge and digital skills.
Cross-functional teams: Form teams from different departments to work on digital projects.
Knowledge transfer: Establish processes that promote the exchange of digital knowledge and best practices.
Mentoring and support
Provide mentoring programs and support for employees who are struggling with digital technologies.
Digital mentors: Experienced employees who act as mentors and support less experienced colleagues.
Support systems: Establish internal support teams or points of contact to help with technical questions and problems with the new technologies.
Transparent communication
Open and transparent communication about digital initiatives and changes to keep all employees on the same page.
Regular updates: Communicate information about digital projects and their progress regularly to all employees.
Explanations and instructions: Provide easy-to-understand instructions and explanations of new digital tools and processes.
Flexibility and adaptability
Managers must be flexible and adaptable in order to respond to the different digital needs and skills of employees.
Customized solutions: Offer customized solutions that meet the specific needs of employees.
Feedback-based customization: Further develop training and technology programs based on employee feedback.
